Cedar Shake Roofing in Lilburn

Shakes set with the right gaps and airflow, so the wood dries between rains instead of rotting.

Wood Roofs Need Air

Cedar looks great. It weathers to a soft gray and gives a house real character. But wood behaves like wood. It swells when wet, shrinks when dry and rots if it stays damp. That is why cedar needs small gaps between shakes, layers underneath that let moisture out and airflow so it can dry after a rain. Skip those and you get cupping, splitting and moss years too soon. Under heavy shade, the problems come faster. Our cedar visits are slow and thorough. We count split and curled pieces, probe the green, mossy patches, look at the metal in the valleys and note which slopes never get sun. Then comes the honest part: can the bad sections be patched, or has the whole roof gone soft? If we rebuild it, each piece gets its own small gap and two nails in the right spot, valley metal is new, and a vent runs the length of the peak. And if shingles or metal would simply serve your house better, that is what we will tell you.
